During its recent Flower and Garden Show, Hicks Nurseries in Westbury displayed The Healing Garden quilt, a queen-sized cover sewed by a Carle Place homemakers group for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program in Garden City.
The quilt is appropriate for display in a garden center since its patterns are derived from plants that are used in the treatment of cancer. They include rosy periwinkle, a common groundcover from which is derived a drug that helps increase the chance of remission for leukemia, sweet potato, which is now in clinical trials in the treatment of lung cancer.
The nursery is also involved with a breast cancer fund called Meghan's Pansies, named in memory of a young woman who died of breast cancer.
