Los Angeles Magazine: VEGAS Style - sites in Las Vegas, Nevada

If visitors' pockets are bulging as they arrive in Las Vegas, it's not always with money meant for the casinos. These days, they're as likely to have fantasies of scoring the perfect bauble or handbag as they are of lining up those elusive cherries on a slot machine.

And it's a better bet. Need fine jewelry? Las Vegas offers Tiffany & Co., Fred Paris, Cartier and The Jewelry Salon, just to name a few. Looking for fashion? You'll have even more options -- from Giorgio Armani to Yves Saint Laurent -- than in a game of seven card high-low. Lay down $10,000 on the double zero and you might walk away empty-handed from the roulette table. But plunk down the same ten grand at Fred Leighton, and you'll go home with the DeBeers Timepiece, the ultimate egg timer made not with grains of sand, but with 35 carats worth of tiny diamonds suspended in liquid.

Las Vegas, one of America's fastest growing cities, has undeniably become a shopping Mecca. The non-stop construction of new hotels over the past few years has yielded other benefits: world class stores up and down the strip and beyond to meet the needs of both visitors and locals.

It's a safe bet that Julia Roberts, George Clooney and the rest of the stellar cast of Stephen Soderberg's "Oceans Eleven" spent much of their free time -- and a portion of their stellar salaries -- hitting the chic boutiques of Vegas.

Still not convinced there are as many people traveling to Las Vegas to shop as there are to gamble? Just look around McCarren Airport: practically everyone clutches shopping bags adorned with prestigious logos, while very few appear to depart the city with bags of money tucked under their arms.

Until as recently as ten years ago, the shopping in Las Vegas was as dismal as the dining, but, much as there has been a revolution in the city's restaurants, boutiques and department stores have also made huge gains. An average of 36 million visitors come through town each year, and Las Vegas merchants know their money is not just going to craps and roulette.

Locals say the transformation began with The Forum Shops at Caesars. The fabulous high-end clothing and merchandise they offered was a dramatic departure from the previous gift shops selling t-shirts, shot glasses and fuzzy dice. These days, a quick jaunt to Vegas might afford lavish furnishings for the home or luxurious beauty and fashion finds.

While fine stores line the strip and beyond, the serious shopper with limited time can focus on a few areas in and around town. The aforementioned Forum Shops at Caesars Palace set the pace, with a half million square feet of retail space, and they remain one of the hottest locations for shoppers. Additionally, any fashionista worth her Manolos may find bliss at the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian, the stylish boutiques of Via Bellagio at Bellagio and the merchants in the Desert Passage at the Aladdin.

Fashion

Banana Republic

One Banana Republic looks pretty much like any other -- except for this massive shop with its Las Vegas theme. You'll find vintage black and white photos of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. running alongside the staircase leading to the second floor balcony level. All the Banana Republic classics fill more than 18,000 square feet of retail space. Best bets are the high-quality calfskin leather jackets and pants, but you can also purchase great sweaters, shirts and a wide variety of accessories. The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/650-5623; The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian 702/733-1566

BCBG Max Azaria

Modern and versatile women's wear from the BCBG Max Azaria line -- a favorite of celebrities -- is what fills these two shops. From trendy suits to the perfect little black dress, BCBG clothes are popular for their ability to go from the boardroom to the bar with a few quick-change accessories and a little dab of make-up. Desert Passage at the Aladdin 702/735-2947; The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian 702/866-2366

Bebe

As seen in their provocative ads, the clothing at Bebe is not for the faint of heart. The fashion forward line appeals to a wide range of confident, body conscious women: sexy suits, daring dresses, and their ever-popular pants and jeans can all be found at this boutique.

There's easy access to all the clothes, and it's no hassle to try them on. Desert Passage at the Aladdin 702/892-0406; The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/735-8885; The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian 702/734-1300

Boss Hugo Boss

The classic men's wear of Hugo Boss' Black Label fills this large shop. Leather and suede jackets are top sellers, but they also stock suits and sport coats, as well as both casual and dress pants. The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/696-9444

Cesare Paciotti

Footwear fetishists know Cesare Paciotti for its exquisite men's and women's shoes, and the lavish displays in this gallery-like space lets every shoe bask in the spotlight. The shoes and some accessories, including handbags and belts, are available in fine leather and a variety of exotic skins. Desert Passage at the Aladdin 702/733-6034; The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian 702/414-3688

Giorgio Armani

Fans of Armani can find both his White Label and the definitive Black Label lines of clothing for men and women in this spacious, modernist boutique. Anyone who has ever watched the Academy Awards[R] knows how many celebrities swear by Armani, with its impeccable fit and chic lines. And no one does tuxedoes better than Giorgio, and you can choose from several styles, with a variety of both classic and contemporary looks. Via Bellagio at Bellagio 702/893-8327

Gucci

Get your Gucci at one of two fabulous locations -- at Caesars or the Bellagio. The latter just relocated to a larger space to meet the heavy demand for the stylish ready to wear line, including leather dresses. And the recently remodeled store in the Forum Shops just added another 2,500 square feet. A sleek space, white walls with white lacquer trim, showcases Gucci's distinctive luggage, watches, purses, wallets, sunglasses and other logo-laden items. Via Bellagio at Bellagio 702/732-9300; The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/369-7333

Jimmy Choo

A visit to Jimmy Choo Shoes to sneak a peak at an outrageous pair of pumps, embroidered silk sandals, or sexy stilettos will get anyone's heart racing. Celine Dion, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler are just a few of the well-heeled crowd of celebrities and affluent shoppers who have walked in -- and walked out with fabulous finds like skimpy, strappy red crocodile sandals and mules adorned with Swarovski crystals over Pucci fabric. Men can amuse themselves with hand-stitched Italian loafers, or simply kick back on the eggplant-hued velvet sofa while watching others shop. The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian 702/733-1802

Kenneth Cole

This Kenneth Cole boutique is one of only five locations in the entire country (and the sole site in Las Vegas) offering the designer's full line of women's clothing, accessories and shoes -- with plenty of each. Women should head upstairs, while clothing and accessories for men can be found on the ground floor of the expansive 8,000 square foot store. The Forum Shops at Ceasars 702/794-2653; The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian 702/836-1916

Max Mara

Max Mara, maker of some of the finest camel coats around, can also be found at Caesars. All three of the design house's collections of women's wear are available at this stylishly modern and minimalist boutique, from the classic Italian tailoring of the Max Mara line to the more casual weekend wear, and finally, the fitted, sexy looks of Sport Max. The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/732-0900

Salvatore Ferragamo

To most women, Ferragamo means shoes, and shoppers will find hundreds of stylish pairs here, including a new line of silk footwear coordinated with the company's silk scarves. Comfortable leather chairs make it easy -- and comfortable -- to sit back and try some on. But it's not all about the feet here, as this boutique also stocks handbags, accessories and the pieces from both the women's and men's ready to wear line. The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/933-9333

St. John

This Southern California company makes high end knitwear for ladies. A lovely store, St. John stocks the label's entire line, from resort wear to elegant evening pieces, and accessories like shoes and handbags. They also carry the Gray & Gray line, a fun and lively label designed by St. John president Kelly Gray. The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/893-0044

JEWELRY

Bvlgari

The fabulous Bvlgari line of jewelry, watches, scarves, handbags and other must-have merchandise all carries the unmistakable logo of the prestigious Italian company. Caesars Forum Shops, 3500 Las Vegas Blvd. South, 702/734 2001

Cartier

The seafoam green carpet at Cartier is emblazoned with the company logo, and the name is etched in script in the heavy, brass-framed glass doors, which adds to the impressive and elegant atmosphere. Cartier's stock in trade -- fine watches, gem-encrusted jewels, exquisite gifts, and even fragrances -- is showcased in the chain's standard display cases of dark wood and green faux marble. The Appian Way at Caesars 702/733-6652

Fred Paris

Fred Paris (also known as Fred Joaillier) is famous for its one-of-a-kind pieces in a wide range of prices, topping out at about $2 million. White and yellow gold settings for diamonds and sapphires are the house specialty, and most stones here are natural, unlike the treated stones that can sometimes be found elsewhere. This attractive store is like an oversized jewel box, with its walls of sycamore and precious creations displayed in glass cases, The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/650-0090

Mayors Jewelers

Private rooms for VIP shoppers is just one of the many elements of client service that distinguishes Mayors from the competition. It's a spacious store, complete with a separate Bridal Salon offering an array of services for women soon to wed. One of a kind pieces can be found among the estate jewelry, and custom design work is also available. Desert Passage at the Aladdin 702/866-5955

Mikimoto

ACCESSORIES

Chanel

The Chanel boutique is spacious, with inviting sofas and chairs that provide a much-appreciated rest during a long shopping spree. Ties are the only men's item, while women can choose among cosmetics (including in-store exclusives from the popular perfume line), sunglasses, shoes, handbags, scarves, luggage and last, but not least, suits. The store stocks the full ready to wear line. Via Bellagio at Bellagio 702/765-5505

Christian Dior

It's just leather goods -- handbags and wallets -- from the Christian Dior line at this small gem of a shop. A great place for last-minute gifts for the jet setter. The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/737-9777

Louis Vuitton

The giant trunk at Louis Vuitton that greets eager shoppers is a relic from a past era of travel, reminiscent of elegant voyages by train or boat. If the large steamer's not your speed, smaller, more practical, hard luggage, all bearing the classic logo, stands stacked at the rear of the store, including soft duffels in a variety of sizes. Like all Louis Vuitton, stores, this one has oak cases holding smaller items, and comfortable dark brown leather chairs for weary shoppers. Check out the line of fine writing instruments from the cigar-sized pens swathed in alligator to the newer, sleek metallic line. The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/732-1227

Lunettes

Shaq, George Strait and Sinbad are just a few celebrity customers of this unusual shop, which has thousands of frames for both sunglasses and daily prescription eyewear. They have the largest selection of Cartier frames in town, and can customize them by adding diamonds, rubies, sapphires or anything else you'd like. Check out the large Cartier case just inside the entrance; if you can't find what you need, look at the frames by Bvlgari, Montblanc and nearly three dozen other high end designers. Paris Hotel & Casino 702/734-0170

Prada

The fresh, trademark lime green walls are the first clue that this isn't just any old clothing store. It's Prada. And the cutting edge fashion house, where the relentlessly hip staff are clad in the latest runway looks, is home to some of the world's most wonderful shoes, bags, and suits. The Italian company's oft-imitated goods are displayed on slick glass shelves, with the most popular items at eye level, begging to be touched. Gloves, key chains, and wallets are also available, for those who want a smaller piece of the ever-popular Prada line. Via Bellagio at Bellagio 702/866-6886

HOME DESIGN

Gianni Versace

Colorfully patterned carpets contrast the white marble floors in the Gianni Versace boutique. Wild designs by Donatella Versace fill the back of the ground floor, though most of this two-story space is devoted to items for the home. Ask to be taken upstairs, past the velvet rope (children are discouraged from ascending to the upper level, with its more breakable items). Here, you'll find carpets, linens and comforters, as well as Versace designs for Rosenthal china and crystal, including their signature espresso cups with wing-like handles. The Forum Shops at Caesars 702/796-7222

Hermes Paris

Frank Lloyd Wright-like geometric patterns adorn the entrance of-Hermes Paris and the Hermes logo has been inlaid in miniature tile on the floor by the door. With large windows overlooking the Bellagio's "lake," this shop has more natural light than most, and its collection of strikingly designed flatware, espresso cups, handbags, luggage and accessories is well displayed amongst warm wood paneling and a high vaulted ceiling. Robes, towels and fragrances are also available. Via Bellagio at Bellagio 702/893-8900

Lladro

There's no mistaking a Lladro piece -- these lovely porcelain collectibles, with their distinctive coloring and attention to detail, catch the eye from a distance. If you're searching for delicate, hand-painted decorative pieces in limited editions be sure not to miss the Lladro gallery in the Venetian. The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian 702/414-3747

L'Occitane

All the products from this French company are made from natural ingredients in Provence. This fine store evokes that most pleasant part of the world with hand-tiled floor and rustic yellow walls. The majority of the merchandise is unisex, and the most popular products include vegetable-based soaps and a hand cream made with honey, almond and shea butter. Desert Passage at the Aladdin 702/697-7006

BEAUTY

Origins

The full line of Origins' natural cosmetics is available at this mid-sized boutique. It's a typical Origins store, open and brightly lit, with merchandise displayed on light wood shelves. And it's not just for women: men can and do use many of the products, including the popular salt rub, a luxurious body scrub. Desert Passage at the Aladdin 702/732-7050

Sephora

Makeup, fragrances and various goods to promote well-being are the staples at Sephora. The store stocks exclusive, cult brands, as well as their own line, with popular shadows and lip glosses in colors from pale pink to jet black. Home to a $10 million collection, this cellar is far from your average liquor store. Many experts have labeled it amongst the finest wine collections in the country, if not the world. Got a sweet tooth? Check out the million dollar-plus collection of Chateau d'Yquem, with bottles from every vintage produced between 1855 and 1990. Guests are welcome to taste and purchase more than 700 different wines, nearly 300 available by the glass. Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino 702/252-7777

VIP Treatment

Ready to head home? Don't spend the last few hours of your trip in line at the airport, juggling suitcases and shopping bags. CAPS (Certified Airline Passenger Services) allows you to check in for your flight right at your hotel -- as long as you're staying at one of their dozen properties, including Mandalay Bay and the Aladdin, and flying on one of their ten airlines, including United, Virgin and Southwest. For a fee of $6 per person -- far less than most people probably blow on slots in the airport -- you can check your bags and get your boarding pass at any of the CAPS stations around town and stretch out your last few hours in Las Vegas before heading to the airport. 877/765-2277
