Popular Music and Society: Accordions, Banjos, Cornets … and Zithers: sound recordings archive

Librarians are accustomed to identifying general resource guides dealing with musical instruments. From Baker's Student Encyclopedia of Music (Kuhn) to The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments (Sadie), print studies abound. There are also many specialized periodicals--including Brass Bulletin, Dulcimer Player News, Modern Drummer, and The American Viola Society Journal--that explore instrumental construction, performance capacity, and orchestral history (see Table 1). However, sound recordings archivists and music librarians face new challenges when they explore the nature of musical instrument references in popular music. Few discographies focus on the images of individual instruments. While many music guides feature notation suggestions for saxophones, guitars, and pianos, the identification of musical instruments as objects of popular culture has been woefully neglected. Among the first studies to examine the relationship between contemporary recordings and specific music-making devices is Instruments of Desire: The Electric Guitar and the Shaping of Musical Experience by Steve Waksman. The following essay and discography extends this vision of the diverse roles of musical instruments in American cultural life.

Twentieth-century sound recordings abound with references to audio devices that provide rhythmic enrichment, melodic support, or other aspects of dramatic punctuation in popular tunes. The variety of musical instruments acknowledged is remarkable. Beyond expected commentaries on keyboards ("Piano in the Dark" and "Who's Gonna Play This Old Piano"), percussion instruments ("Drum Village" and "Drums in My Heart"), strings ("The Fiddle Man" and "Mandolins in the Moonlight"), woodwinds ("Concerto for Clarinet" and "(Everytime I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone"), and brass instruments ("Bugle Call Rag" and "Trombone Cholly"), there are also salutes to many exotic music-making devices ("Didgeridoo," "Ukulele Love," "Washboard Blues," "When Erastus Plays His Old Kazoo," and "Zither").

Few artists have acknowledged the Faustian bargain with their instruments that reportedly characterized bluesman Robert Johnson's mythic relationship to his devilish guitar. Yet the personas of many popular performers are directly linked to their artistic weapons. Songs by B. B. King ("Lucille"), Duane Eddy ("(Dance with the) Guitar Man"), Preston Epps ("Bongo Rock"), Billy Joel ("Piano Man"), Gene Krupa ("Drummer Boy"), Sandy Nelson ("Drums Are my Beat"), and Stevie Wonder ("Hey Harmonica Man") express heartfelt reverence for their own instruments. Beyond these legendary artists, fictional tales also meld music-making devices to a variety of distinctive characters. Recorded illustrations include: "The All American Boy," "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," "The Guitar Man" (Bread), "The Guitar Man" (Elvis Presley), "Johnny B. Goode," "The Little Drummer Boy," "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Nashville Cats," and "On Broadway."

As demonstrated in the previous song listings, notions of autobiographies and general storytelling revolving around musical instruments are quite common in popular recordings. So are situation comedies. With respect to the violin, for instance, there are numerous tunes that reflect the foibles of the human condition via slang lyric references. These include: "Fiddle Around," "Fit as a Fiddle," "I Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle," and "Second Fiddle." Other humorous approaches to instruments are illustrated in the revivals of well-known tunes such as "Dueling Banjos" by humorist Martin Mull who parodied the original recording of "Dueling Tubas." Spike Jones and His City Slickers applied a similar demonic treatment to David Rose's "Holiday for Strings." More serious performers have used structural metaphors such as the "Ebony and Ivory" keys on a piano to denote the beneficial interaction of cultural and ethnic diversity.

Tunes without lyrics often gain their titles from the primary instrument played in their recorded renditions. Examples of this phenomenon include: "Bongo Rock," "Kitten on the Keys," "Let There Be Drums," and "The Toy Trumpet." Likewise, virtuoso performers sometimes craft songs for themselves or receive lyrical tributes from other artists that link signature instruments, names, and musical styles. Illustrations of fame and fortune secured through specific identification with trumpets, saxophones, guitars, and pianos include: "Hank Williams' Guitar" (Freddie Hart), "I Hope Gabriel Likes My Music" (Louis Armstrong), "Guitar Queen" (Bonnie Raitt), "Someone Stole Gabriel's Horn" (Bunny Berigan), "Walkin' with Mr. Lee" (Lee Allen), "Yakety Axe" (Chet Atkins), and "Yakety Sax" (Boots Randolph).

Finally, an array of recordings relates specific sounds or moods to particular instruments. For example, the adjective "mellow" is used as a descriptor for dozens of instruments, including "(Everytime I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone." Yet it is comic portrayal of mock instrumental virtuosity that seems to attract popular attention on many recordings. Whether the performing antics of berserk chipmunks ("Alvin's Harmonica"), the bizarre tale of a guitar-playing Edgar Rice Burroughs offshoot ("Gitarzan"), or the mutilation of Scottish tradition ("Bagpipes--That's My Bag"), the road to instrumental lunacy is broad and well traveled.

The diversity of songs and lyrical perspectives related to musical instruments warrants further scholarly investigation. The following alphabetical discography of musical instruments (see Table 2) features more than 250 recorded resources. This song listing is divided into two categories: single releases (78- and 45-rpm discs, cassette singles, and CD singles); and album releases (33 1/3-rpm records, cassette albums, and compact discs). The recorded illustrations span nine decades, from the 1910s through the 1990s. Each citation includes a song title, a record number, the performing artist, and the date of release. The discography is selective and illustrative.
