SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 1996 AUG 14 (NB) -- Police computers failed and Melbourne's Casino closed for repairs for more than five hours early Tuesday after power failed on Saturday night.
Electricians worked on casino back-up switching gear damaged during the blackout. The system, designed to compensate for a reduction in power, could not handle a complete power failure.
Electricity utility Citipower has not been able to explain what caused the failure that also hit the neighboring World Trade Center, which houses the police headquarters for the city west zone and put the police computer out of action. (19960814)
