Casino deal allows games at more sites

Madison -- The Ho-Chunk Nation could put casino games at convenience stores on tribal land in Monroe and Shawano counties under the compact the tribe signed last week with Gov. Jim Doyle.

But Ho-Chunk spokesman Mark Butterfield said Monday the operations likely would have a limited number of slot machines.

"There will not be mini-Las Vegases all over the state," he said.

The sites -- one in Wittenberg and the other near Tomah -- can have casino-type games as long as 50% or more of the property on which the facility is located is used for a primary business purpose other than gaming, such as a gas station or convenience store.

Butterfield said the tribe likely would install only slot machines at those locations, because they are lower maintenance and less expensive to operate than table games such as blackjack.
