Karl Floyd Buttenhoff

SHAWNEE --- Karl Floyd Buttenhoff, 45, Shawnee, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, near Lake Clinton in Douglas County. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to Tamegonik Lodge No. 147, Order of the Arrow or to Boy Scouts of America.

Alice M. Hamilton

WESTMORELAND --- Alice M. Hamilton, 86, Westmoreland, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bachelor-Faulkner- Dart-Surber Chapel in Belleville. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in rural Norway.

BALDWIN CITY --- Carl Johanning, 87, Baldwin City, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at a Kansas City, Mo., hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's United Church of Christ, north of Worden. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Baldwin City.

Robert G. Montgomery

MILFORD --- Memorial services for Robert G. Montgomery, 75, Milford, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Madura Congregational Church in Wakefield. He died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Select Speciality Hospital in Topeka. Holmes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley is in charge of arrangements.

Ethan I. Powell

JUNCTION CITY --- Ethan I. Powell, 12 days, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Stormont-Vail. A memorial service will be at a later date. Cremation services were arranged with Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory Mass-Hinitt Chapel in Junction City.

VERMILLION --- Evaline A. Reinhart, 89, Vermillion, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003.

Services will be at 11 am. Thursday at Vermillion Christian Church, with burial following at Vermillion Cemetery. Hayes-Popkess in Centralia is in charge of arrangements.

James Edward Torrey

WAMEGO --- James Edward Torrey, 65, Wamego, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka after a long illness.

He was born June 5, 1938, in Wamego, the son of Vernie and Lucy Daylor Torrey. Mr. Torrey graduated from Wamego High School, the class of 1956.

He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber after 13 years. He also worked at Wamego Sand Co. prior and following Goodyear with a total of 22 years of service.

Mr. Torrey was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Cottonwood 4-H Livestock Leader and Blackjack American Legion Post No. 260, in St. George. He received the award for Honorary FFA State and Chapter Farmer.

He married Barbara Ann Rand on Feb. 8, 1963, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Wamego.

Mr. Torrey is survived by his wife, Barbara, Wamego; three sons, Michael Torrey, Arlington, Va., Christopher Torrey and wife, Dana, Alma, and Russell Torrey and wife, Kimberly, Alma; two sisters, Peggy Eichman and husband, Al, Wamego, and Patricia Ochs, Midland, Texas; a grandchild, Ashton Torrey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church with Father John Pilcher and Father Tom Hesse as concelebrants. Burial will follow at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery. A prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. today at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, with a visitation until 8:30 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Midland Hospice or St. Bernard's Catholic Church Cemetery Fund. Contributions may be left in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 48, Wamego, 66547.

Alfred C. 'Smiley' Vahsholtz

EMPORIA --- Alfred C. "Smiley" Vahsholtz, 77, rural Emporia, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, south of Emporia. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.
