Potawatomi might join casino debate
Tuesday, January 6, 2004
The Forest County Potawatomi tribe might jump into the debate on the Ho-Chunk Nation's proposal to operate a casino in Madison to correct "inaccuracies" spread by casino opponents, a Potawatomi spokesman said Monday.
The Potawatomi tribe, which operates the state's most lucrative casino in Milwaukee, could advertise to help counter anti-casino messages on the Madison plan, said spokesman Tom Krajewski.
The Ho-Chunk want to convert their DeJope bingo hall to a casino with slot machines, blackjack, craps and roulette. Dane County voters will pass judgment on the proposal in a referendum Feb. 17.
Madison casino foes say it would harm downtown businesses and lead to more crime and social problems.
The Ho-Chunk Nation separately is expected to spend at least $140,000 on television ads in support of its Madison casino plan.
