As things stand now, WrestleMania X8 next Sunday night will be the biggest and best wrestling show ever held. No federation, no territory, no foreign country, no tribute show, nothing has, or possibly ever will, stack up to what the WWF has put together.
There have been big WrestleManias before--Hulk Hogan vs. Andre, Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior, Steve Austin vs. Rock, Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart--but none of those cards hold a candle to this year's. I'm not sure which is a bigger commentary on the quality of this card, the fact Kurt Angle against Kane (both former WWF champions) could be the curtain jerker, or the Unified World title match between HHH and Chris Jericho is the bill's fourth-most anticipated match.
Vince McMahon and company have put together three all-time fantasy match-ups with Austin facing Scott Hall, The Undertaker battling Ric Flair and Hogan going face to face with the Rock. In addition, Rob Van Dam will face William Regal for the intercontinental title, Jazz defends the women's title against Lita and there will be hardcore and tag title defenses as well. Hogan/Rock should steal the show if Hogan can still get it done, but for my money, given their resumes, Flair vs. Undertaker is one for the vault.
HEARD AROUND THE RING: TV Guide goes back to the well one more time and will have four different WWF covers this week. The four superstars featured are HHH, Jericho, Edge and Trish Stratus. ... The Great Muta has been in contact with Shane McMahon and could be on his way to the WWF. ... Jerry Lynn has been told by the WWF at this point there is no room for him on the roster, but after the split he could be brought back. ... The WWA has announced the following participants for its April tour--Sid Vicious, Rey Mysterio Jr., Jeff Jarrett, Scott Steiner, Eddie Guerrero, Juventud Guerrera, Stevie Ray and Buff Bagwell, plus a Devon Storm vs. Sabu cage match. The show will be held in Australia and shown on tape delay in the United States.
HOTLINE: Steve Austin and Vince McMahon fight backstage before SmackDown. I was there and will tell you what the WWF does not want the fans to know about their relationship off camera. Plus, three more matches to be added to WrestleMania Monday night. Get the scoop on the hotline (900) 454-SLAM. Cost is $2 per minute.
