Chicago Sun-Times: Get ready for Goldberg vs. Rock

I would not want to jump the gun and say anyone is getting ready to push the panic button just yet, but it sounds like the WWE is ready to make some concessions it was not going to make a few months ago.

The biggest news is that Bill Goldberg and the WWE are close to a short-term deal that could bring to life the biggest main event in wrestling history. If all goes well, the WWE and Goldberg will OK a deal to have the former WCW champion appear on television just enough to promote a match between Goldberg and The Rock at "WrestleMania 19."

Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock at "WrestleMania 18" would be hard to top, but The Rock vs. Goldberg would be hands-down the biggest moment in the history of the business. Hogan vs. Andre the Giant put 93,000 in the Silverdome, but this one might be enough to attract the entire state of Washington.

Initially, the word was the WWE would not ink Goldberg unless he was willing to do a long-term deal that included house shows, TV and PPV events during the year. But in the interest of moving the company in the right direction, the WWE may put aside its demands and put on a show for the ages.

AROUND THE RING: Sounds like the WWE is determined to get Stone Cold Steve Austin back on the roster in time for the "Royal Rumble." The WWE considers the "Rumble" a crucial piece in getting "WrestleMania" season off to a good start, and getting Austin back would help. ... Shawn Michaels informed the WWE he is willing to work house shows and will be around for "WrestleMania." ... When The Rock makes his return, it could be for the rest of 2003, as his next movie is not scheduled to shoot until next winter. ... Bret "The Hitman" Hart said he has not been contacted by the WWE about returning at the "Raw" 10th anniversary show and has no interest in working for the company. ... Sounds like the WWE has been happy with the performance of newest diva Gail Kim. Kim has been working house shows and dark matches and has impressed everyone.

HOTLINE: I will reveal the four former WWE stars currently talking with the NWA-TNA about a return to the ring, plus three more matches added to the "Royal Rumble" card. It's all on the hotline: (900) 990- SLAM ($2 per minute).
