The Waukesha County Fair will give visitors the chance of a lifetime to crack open a safe even if they don't possess a lengthy criminal record at a new feature this year.
The Court TV "Seriously Entertaining Summer Tour" will visit the fair starting today, and fairgoers can try their hand at cracking open a safe for prizes, playing blackjack with a card shark or learning the tricks of being a private investigator.
Weather forecasts for this weekend are predicting scattered showers, but the fair offers activities such as those sponsored by Court TV that will keep visitors entertained and dry from the rain.
The Masterminds Code Cracking Challenge gives visitors about a 1 in 24 chance of entering the correct code for the safe and winning prizes that include $1,000, $500, $200, iPods, digital cameras and DVD players, said Caron Celestino, emcee of the Court TV tour.
The cash prizes total $2,500.
Fair visitors can also win prizes while playing blackjack with card shark Brian Miller, or they can watch him perform card tricks.
"We really have something for everyone," Celestino said.
Visitors can also try to beat a lie detector test or use X-ray spray to read top secret documents and learn other investigative techniques.
In "The Smoking Gun" area, visitors can view celebrity mug shots and get mug shots of their own taken that they can access on the tour's Web site, www.courttv.com/tour, Celestino said.
Free psychic readings also will be offered.
Each of the five activity zones coincides with popular Court TV shows such as "Masterminds," "Psychic Detectives," "Parco, PI," "The Smoking Gun" and "The Takedown."
The arena marketplace, which is filled with booths selling products that promise to make life better, is a good place to visit when summer storms hit.
And one booth may actually keep that life-changing promise.
Aurora Healthcare, a sponsor of this year's fair, offers blood- pressure tests, sunscreen, vitamins and height/weight tests at its booth near the north doors of the Expo building.
Lynne Broydrick and Sally Warnhoff, with Aurora community relations, said doctors will visit the booth periodically to answer questions.
Sign-up sheets to win one of 15 "Wellness Baskets" or a four- pack of tickets to Kalahari Indoor Water Park will also be located at the booth, she said.
The 4-H Forum showcases talented youths from throughout the county who have developed skills ranging from taking photographs to growing vegetables.
The Iron Beaver Railroad Line, located in the East Hall, is a 4- H exhibit made up of 34 linked squares that create a landscape along a railroad track of Egypt, Africa, Maui and other exotic places.
The individual squares were made by members of the Waukesha 4-H Model Club.
Tom "Flash" Gordon, a leader for the Waukesha 4-H Model Club and representative of the 4-H executive board, said the exhibit began about nine years ago and is a great opportunity for the kids involved.
"It really opens up their imagination," Gordon said. "It actually gives them more of an opportunity to do (model) building in the future."
For families with children, getting out of the rain is as easy as a visit to the 4-H Youth Activity Tent, which offers free craft activities from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Every two hours, a new craft project is introduced, said Sandy Gross, leader of the Minooka 4-H Club. Crafts planned for the next several days include star magnets, sun-catcher wind chimes and picture frames, all completed under a covered tent.
Acts for the Miller Lite Main Stage are Joan Jett today, Tesla on Saturday and REO Speedwagon on Sunday.
All concerts and other activities, excluding carnival rides, are included with the cost of admission.
The fair runs 10 a.m. to midnight today and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for ages 8 to 12, and children 7 and younger are free. Parking is $3.
The fairgrounds are located at 1000 Northview Road, just south of the Crites Field. For more information, go to www.waukeshacountyfair.com.
In a story on Wednesday, it was incorrectly reported that total cash prizes for the code cracking challenge was $25,000.
