Shawn Michaels is a sure Hall of Famer, former multiple-time WWE champion and the first-ever Grand Slam winner. But his best year still could be ahead as 2004 is set up for HBK to have huge success.
On Monday, HHH and HBK put on an instant classic. Though Michaels was not able to win the title, a few things were learned -- fans still go nuts for Michaels, and he can flat out get it done in the ring. And if he still is suffering with an injured back, it doesn't show.
So, with the charisma and in-ring ability to be a great champion, the only thing in Michaels' way is the current "Raw" competition. In his favor right now are all those movie cameras dancing in the minds of the sport's biggest stars. The Rock is off the long-term radar, and HHH is in the process of shooting what could be the first of a handful of films.
Other viable names would be Stone Cold Steve Austin, but he is injured; Kane, who if he was going to be the champ would be already, and Goldberg, who seems out of favor with management.
The best way to keep interest is to have a fan favorite as the champ who looks vulnerable in every title match. Over the last two years, I can't say anybody felt HHH was going to lose the title. It takes the steam out of a card when the title match is over before it starts.
HBK could (and should) defeat HHH for the "Raw" title at the Rumble and go on to defend against many deserving heel opponents.
AROUND THE RING: Brock Lesnar is recovering from knee and elbow injuries but will be ready for his title match vs. Hardcore Holly at the Rumble. ... Was I supposed to believe John Cena really had to win a 3-on-1 match vs. the FBI to get into the "Royal Rumble"? More believable story lines, please!
