In the weeks leading up to "WrestleMania," and certainly after the big event, the rosters of "Raw" and "SmackDown" will start to take on a new look with names like Goldberg, Edge and Chris Benoit on the move.
The strongest rumor right now is that Benoit will win the "Royal Rumble" and will choose to take on the "Raw" champion at "WrestleMania." The winner of the "Rumble" this year has that option - - to jump brands for his title shot. But while that is good news for Benoit, it is bad news for Shawn Michaels.
As good as a Benoit vs. HHH match would be at "Mania," a Benoit vs. HBK main event would draw very little juice. Benoit is good enough to give fans hope that he could win the title, but that means at least two more months of HHH with the gold.
A second option would be to have Goldberg win the "Rumble" and challenge Brock Lesnar for the "SmackDown" title. If Goldberg is to leave the WWE after "WrestleMania" as many have suggested, what better way to go; if Goldberg is to stay with the company, this makes less sense, so I would put my money on Goldberg at the "Rumble" and a farewell at "Mania."
The other hot commodity right now is Edge, who is getting closer to a return from a serious neck injury. Edge could go to either brand and make a huge splash. I would start looking for the former IC and tag champ on Monday nights.
HEARD AROUND THE RING: After the cameras stopped rolling Monday night, HHH and Stone Cold left character long enough to entertain fans in a way not normally seen, and they clearly enjoyed themselves. ... Spanky has decided to leave the WWE.
