Chicago Sun-Times: Fans and Guerrero the big winners

Eddie Guerrero had the honor of pinning Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship at the "No Way Out" PPV, but it was the fans who were the big winners last Sunday night.

In the past, guys like Guerrero just didn't beat giants like Lesnar to take a belt. In fact, guys like Guerrero never even got a chance to be in such a big match. But maybe we have seen the beginning of a new WWE -- a company that puts the fans' interests first and doesn't keep a man out of the title picture just because he is under 7 feet.

Guerrero can flat out get it done in the ring. And if Eddie is allowed to hold the belt for a few months, he undoubtedly will put on a series of highly entertaining matches.

If you want a WWE flaw over the past five years, it's that the company has placed its hopes on oversized and sometimes aging stars. Guys like the Undertaker, Kevin Nash, Rikishi, Mark Henry and others get big pushes, just to succumb to injuries. Not taking away from these guys, but telling wrestlers to limit the high spots and big finishes just so the bigger guns can stay in the race is not the right answer.

Why not try a new direction? Why not let Guerrero and Chris Benoit be the two big champions in the WWE, and let them wrestle guys like Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio Jr., John Cena, RVD, Randy Orton and dozens of others who can put on five-star matches every week.

Put the straps on the smaller, athletic guys and let the big guns battle for pride and bragging rights.
