Give the WWE credit. During the last few months, it has unveiled quite a few new stars, including Carlito Caribbean Cool, Gene Snitsky, Eugene, Heidenreich and Orlando Jordan.
But when there is an influx in talent on the top end, there needs to be some cuts on the bottom end. So the WWE has released a number of superstars. In the last week, the WWE has announced the release of Test, Johnny Stamboli, Rodney Mack, Jazz, Gail Kim, Rico, Chuck Palumbo, Nidia, A-Train and Billy Gunn.
Pretty much all of these wrestlers have had decent runs in the company, but to think they would have had a significant run in them in the near future would be a stretch. The only real surprises were Nidia, Jazz and Gail Kim, all of whom have been featured on Raw" regularly during the last few months.
AROUND THE RING: I got to preview a copy of the new WWE DVD -- The Rise and Fall of the ECW" -- and it might be the company's best release to date. It is good to see the WWE making use of its enormous video library and even better to see some of the old ECW action. If you were a fan of the ECW, you will enjoy all the classic footage and never-before-seen interviews. If you weren't on board during the ECW days, this becomes a much-needed history lesson. Either way, this is a must-see. ... The Survivor Series card is beginning to take shape. JBL will defend the SmackDown" title against Booker T; Undertaker will face Heidenreich; HHH, Bautista, Edge and Snitsky will face Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Maven and Randy Orton; and Team Angle will battle Rob Van Dam, Big Show, Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero.
