NEW JUSTICE OF THE PEACE: Sherman A. Cravins is sworn in as justice of the peace at the St. Landry Parish courthouse in Opelousas, LA, by the clerk of court Charles Jaqueneaux. Cravins, 38, is the first Black to hold the position in Louisiana's District 6 which includes Arnaudville, Leonville and parts of Opelousas, LA. Looking on are his parents Sherman and Margie Cravins. The newly-elected rural judge will handle property settlements, evictions, garnishments and conduct marriages. Cravins, a private investigator, is the owner of Southern Surveillance Company. He and his wife, Helene Simon Cravins, own Blackjack Farms which raises horses.
