Distributed Energy Systems Corporation subsidiary Proton Energy Systems, Inc. recently announced it has received two additional Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) awards, totaling approximately $900,000, for regenerative fuel cell (RFC) demonstration projects to commence next January.
According to Proton, the company plans to provide the Town of Wallingford Electric Division with a 15-kilowatt (kW) UNIGEN RFC backup power unit for use in its control room battery system, operating 24 hours a day and providing more than eight hours of backup power at the rated load in the event of a power outage.
Proton said the second project entails the upgrade of an existing RFC system located at the Mohegan Sun Casino's Energy, Environment, Economics and Education Center, transitioning the current system to a permanent installation of a four-kW model, with two new high-pressure, high-output hydrogen generators.
"CCEF continues to be an important partner in our endeavors to bring our UNIGEN technology architecture into various backup power market segments," said Proton Hydrogen Technology Group senior vice president Robert Friedland. "These different sites each have unique requirements that allow for significant learning in real world applications."
