Southwest Farm Press: Produce meet Aug. 11 on South Padre Island

Watermelon: It's not just a fun thing to eat anymore. In fact, watermelon contains more health-promoting lycopene than tomatoes, yet rarely gets credit as a health food.

Horticulturist Stephen King will explain some of the reasons watermelon should be taken more seriously in his discussion, "Watermelon, a Healthy Option," during the Texas Produce Convention Aug. 11 on South Padre Island.

King's presentation will be part of a Foods for Health seminar that focuses on Texas A&M research. Other topics include limonoids in citrus fruits, increasing calcium level in plants and an update on the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center's foods for health program.

The healthy foods seminar is part of a three-day conference - Aug. 10-12 - that features the latest information on produce production, marketing and research. In addition to educational opportunities, registrants also have an opportunity to participate in a golf or fishing tournament and the annual casino night.

An industry expo offers attendees an opportunity to see the latest in equipment, services and products for the fruit and vegetable industry.
