KONA, Hawaii -- A 58-year-old artist has come up with an inventive approach to retirement planning. Karla Sachi is offering exclusive rights to more than 600 of her paintings, poems, songs and sculptures made before 2003, as well as biographical book and movie rights, Internet domain names and access to her archives--all for $1 million.
"I believe it's worth way more than that," said Sachi, a former Playboy centerfold model and actress who grew up in Malibu, Calif., and has lived in Hawaii since 1977. She's hoping that the large sum of money will allow her to focus on her painting. Now, she said, she feels burdened with the business of managing her body of work. "I'm carrying it around like a ball and chain," she said. "I'm a manic, driven artist--that's all I know, and I have a need to find sanctuary." Several potential buyers have expressed interest, according to Sachi.
A painter all her life, Sachi's professional art career began in 1982 with whimsical soft sculptures carried by Circus Circus casino in Las Vegas and FAO Schwartz. Her 30-inch likeness of Hugh Hefner was featured in Playboy magazine that same year.
Along with painting subjects in watercolor, mixed media and oils, Sachi's body of work includes non-fiction writing, children's books, poetry, music and bronze sculpture. Her art has been published in greeting cards, books, posters and other products and is currently featured at Genesis Gallery at the Four Seasons' Hualalai Resort and the King's Shops in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
