Jack Kincade is at the end of his rope and his career. He has a failed marriage, his work at the FBI no longer interests him, and gambling and drinking have taken over his life. When a bomb is placed under the Cook County jail, he is late to the most important meeting of his career, but his association with Ben Alton, an agent physically damaged as much as Kincade is emotionally, leads him to disarm the bomb and solve a three-year-old kidnapping case. At this point, the story is only half over and the testing of Kincade's mettle as a FBI agent and as a man has only begun.
The story is complex, both in the criminal investigation and the investigation of what makes a man go bad. Charles has a huge range of voices, although Kincade's voice sounds as if it had been run over by a truck and barely resuscitated and is a little too different from everyone else's voice to be comfortable to the listener's ear.
