TELECOMWORLDWIRE-8 April 2004-UK Government considers regulating online gambling(C)1994-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
The UK Government has been advised that remote gambling on the web, mobile phones and interactive television must be licensed and regulated in Britain.
A cross-party committee on the draft gambling bill said that the government should create safe areas for gambling on the Internet and give UK consumers the option of using well-regulated services.
A spokesperson for the committee said that it is preferable for this sector of the industry to be regulated within the UK or else consumers would have no option but to use offshore sites which could be poorly regulated.
