A new labelling system to make the Internet safer has been revealed by the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA), a non-profit international organisation.
The system is said to be based on the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and aims to make the labelling of complex websites more simple. This is intended to encourage more online brands to label their sites and make the Internet safer for children to use. The ICRA system is reported to have moved from the Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) to the W3C RF format, which is being used increasingly in web applications such as RSS, blogs and shared bookmarks.
According to the ICRA the new system includes a questionnaire to allow content providers to effectively describe the content of their websites and includes shortcut buttons to enable prompt labelling for XXX and gambling sites. The move to RDF is also said to enable the use of online tools to filter content and will encourage the incorporation of quality labels such as trust marks to further promote safe browsing.
